Our experiences coordinating the ANT have brought us a clear perception of the immense strides we have made over the last eleven years. Along the way we have discovered the importance of proceeding hand-in-hand with scientific research, since only this can give our work real credibility.
Recently we have been able to scientifically document Reverse Voices (see issues 40 and 41 of our magazine) and the existence of contacts. But up until now, there has never been a complete identification of the communicator in a transcontact. It’s worth pointing out that for scientific purposes the mere mention of a name during a transcontact is not enough. For the identification to be accepted, the rigorous calculations of a technical voice analysis are required.
And here is the "present" we received on the eve of a visit by astronaut Edgar Mitchell to our home.
From the moment that a partnership between our international organization, GAIT, the Global Association for Instrumental Communication, and IONS, the Institute for Noetic Sciences (USA) began to be considered, we knew that, for our researach to be taken seriously by scientists, it had to be rigorous. When I found out that Dr. Mitchell was to visit my house, we began to line up cases in favor of our survivalist thesis. Mitchell, the sixth man on the moon and a member of the Apollo 14 mission, founded IONS immediately upon his return from the moon. (There will be more details in issue 42 of our magazine).
It was exactly at this time that thecase involving ANT member Zilda Monteiro occurred. The data (transcontacts) were sent to Dr. Alessandro Pecci for analysis. Whether or not this was another assist from our Communicating Friends we don’t know, but it certainly guaranteed that the astronaut was impressed with the numbers and graphs.
Before his report, who better to describe what happened than Zilda herself. Here is her account.
The Case
"I was married to Edson for five years. Even though we had some problems in the relationship, we always believed that there was a spiritual link between us.
ITC appeared in our lives at a time when we were becoming aware of the survival of the spirit and we felt the need to find out more about the topic.
We read a number of books about ITC with great interest and Edson, the more daring of the two, immediately started making recordings. It took me a while longer, as I felt a bit insecure and wanted to learn more.
Edson got results right from the beginnning of his experiments. This surprised me, since I believed that results would come only after a long period of dedication.
Edson recorded twice a week and for each session, he used two different tapes to compare the results later. Encouraged by his success, I myself decided to start (in 1996) , and have been recording ever since.
We separated in 1997. At this time, Edson interrupted his recording. but always intended to get back to it as soon as possible.
He moved from Sao Paulo to Rio de Janeiro, and we lost contact.
The Heart Attack
On 6/30/99, Edson suffered a heart attack and was admitted to the Laranjeiras Hospital in Rio.
On 7/6/99, he had Claudia, his new girlfriend, give me a call to tell me what had happened to him, since he was afraid I might not want to talk to him. I thanked her and with all my heart wished him.a speedy recovery.
After hanging up, I became aware of the gravity of the situation and realized that I didn’t have his telephone number or any way of contacting him. I was afraid something even worse might happen and that I would not find out about it.
Through other people, I finally got his phone number on 7/7/99. He was still hospitalized and we spoke for a long time.
I noted that he was quite emotional. He told me that he was unable to sleep, even with sedatives He still appeared to nurture feelings of love and great respect for me.
He told me that he intended to return to his ITC experiments, but that he was afraid that the people around him wouldn’t understand.
He also spoke of his desire to have home religious services, as we did when we were married. All of this did his heart good. Finally, he told me that he was going to have tests on Thursday, 7/8/99, and that these exams would determine whether he would have a bypass operation, an angioplasty, or perhaps just be released from the hospital. I insisted that he call me on Thursday as soon as he found out. Since we had been out of touch for some time, he asked me if I had a celllular phone and asked me for the number. He memorized the number and did as we had arranged. On Thursday, 7/8/99, he called me and told me that he had tried to call many times, but just got the voice mail box.
According to the tests, he would have to have an angioplasty on Friday, 9/6/99, and was very much afraid.
He was a heavy smoker and the doctors told him he would have to quit. This was very hard for him to accept. I tried to calm him down by saying that an angioplasty is a relatively simple procedure, and compared it to what had happened to my father, who was twice his age, had had a quadruple bypass and was in fine shape.
I suggested that he pray and have confidence. I reminded him of an experience that we had one time, of a perfume that suddenly spread throughout our apartment, at three in the morning, a delightful, indescribable aroma; he woke me up so that I could smell it and we marvelled at it together. I also suggested that he visualize our spiritual friends, our communicants via ITC, who would certainly help him. Emotional as he was, he seemed to regret things that had happened in the past. He called me "my love" and at the end sent me a "kiss to the heart."
The Promise
At the end of our conversation, I requested that as soon as he got out of the hospital , he should give me a call. I don’t know if he was serious or just kidding when he said "If I don’t call you from here, I’ll call you from "there".
Deterioration and Death
On 7/9/99, as the angioplasty, which was being performed just with sedation, was beginning, Edson had another heart attack and had to be taken immediately to the intensive care unit. There he said good bye to his mother and his girlfriend, Claudia, and asked them to leave the cell phone with him because he wanted to talk to someone. (This wasn’t possible because the hospital does not permit the use of cell phones in the ICU). They were both extremely concerned as they left him. As soon as they got home, they received another call informing them that Edson had suffered cardiac arrest, and for them to come back immediately.
After this day, 7/9/99, he never regained consciousness. He was only able to breathe with the use of machines, and later had a tracheotomy.
Following these developments from a distance, I decided to ask for assistance at the spiritist center that I attend. The friends from the Other Side told me that Edson was involved in the process of deciding whether to go to the spiritual world or to stay. If he stayed (survived), he would be in a vegetative state, and this he could not accept. He remained in the ICU for 39 days, and passed away on 8/16/99.
The Contact
Arriving home from work on 9/10/99, I put the cellular phone in the charger. When I took it out, I noticed that there was a message in the voice mailbox. As I listened, a strange sensation gripped me. A hoarse, tired-sounding but extremely clear voice said "I LOVE YOU" and then a noise made comprehension difficult.
My first impulse was to erase the message, since I thought it was just a mistake. On 9/11/99, I called Sonia Rinaldi, coordinator of ANT, and told her what happened. Curiously, when days earlier I told her of Edson’s passing, she immediately said "He’ll be in touch, just wait". Could it be?
We talked and concluded that at that moment, the data at hand were insufficient. All I had were Edson’s promise.. and a cell phone message.
As our work in Transcommunication is governed by total impartiality and rigorous scientific control, I remembered that I had a number of tapes of Edson’s voice from the many experiments that we had carried out.
I had no way to record the message (take it out of my voice mail box), so I asked Sonia to do it, and gave her the access code to my cellular messages.
First Confirmation
Responding to Sonia’s suggestion, I got out a box in which Edson had left about fifty cassette tapes. As I was anxious about the possibility (or not) that this was a message from him, I mentally asked for proof as I looked at the tapes , and if he had really left me that message on the cell phone, for a sign. But I had no idea in what form this "confirmation" would come.
I picked out one of the tapes at random from among the many in the box. Of course I had no idea what was on the tape. I put the tape in the recorder to make a copy and was taken aback. Now the message on the cell phone was left on September 10, 1999. The tape I had picked completely at random from among dozens was recorded exactly on September 10, 1997.
More Confirmations
At Sonia’s request, on Sunday, 9/12/99 I conducted an experiment with my recorder, in which I insistently asked Edson whether the message on the cellular phone was his. I sent Sonia this tape along with a tape of Edson’s voice while he was alive and waited. Sonia listened to the tape and transcribed the dozens of contacts occuring during the experiment, including the confirmation. For example, when I asked, "Was it you, Edson?" a male voice answered right away, "Of course it was". And a female voice added "He’s with us." But some of the responses were even more decisive. In one, Sonia says she heard "Mom, take care of my daughter"; it so happens that nobody, including Sonia, knew that Edson had a little daughter out of wedlock. In addition, the word "birthday" came up. This shocked me, because I had just celebrated my birthday the day before, and while I was married and even after, Edson never forgot my birthday.
And More:
With the tape in hand, Sonia digitalized the recording and was able to "clean up" the noise that came after the message. And there it was: "I told you".
I believe that, as he had wished, Edson began experimenting again, but this time, from the Other Side, and this is one of the most touching birthday presents I could have received . This is mainly because of the opportunity to provide scientists with data to analyze, and because it constitutes the first documented case of the identification of a deceased person.
The audio
Here is the message in the cellular phone voice mail box, in a hoarse voice (as you would expect from someone who had just had a tracheotomy a few days before and suggesting great effort). The voice says"

With all the data in hand, (the voice of Edson while alive, his supposed after-death voice and details of the experiment) we contacted Dr. Alessandro Pecci, a specialist in this type of investigation trained at the University of Sao Paulo. He filed the following report, which meets rigorous international standards:
Report here
TECHNICAL REPORT Pieces of Examination: For this study there are 4 motivation-pieces which are three recordings numbered 1,2, 3, and 4:
All them were put into digital form by the use of an IBM-PC computer, by means of a standard sound board, Sound Blaster, with resolution of 16 bits, with a sample rate of 11025 samples per second.
Objective of the Examination:
To verify if the recording of tape 1, from now on identified as Speaker A, coincides with the voice of tape 2, identified as Speaker B. who is na unknown speaker.
As per statistic references and for comparison with speakers A and B, we will consider the contents of tape 3, from now on identified as Speaker C and D – who sor sure are different between themselves as well as are differents from Speakers A and B.
Standards of comparison:
Here 4 parts of the recordings are objective of standard comparison, with ".wav" format numbered as follows:
· 1 recording which lasts for about 2.6 seconds of Speaker A's voice, here named trl (from Edson when alive).
. 1 recording from (the unkwon) Speaker B's voice lasting about 1.4 seconds, of here named tst1.
· 1 recording from Speaker C, which lasts aprox. 2.6 seconds, here identified as Tst2;
· 1 recording of Speaker D, which lasts 1,5 secnds, here identified as tst3;
Guidance of the works:
Pre-processing of the Samples
The samples have been standardized so that they have the same signal level and the same signal-noise relation. The parts that have no voice have been removed, as they do not characterize the speaker. Out of the standardized samples there have been taken Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients - MFCC, using windows of 23.2 minutes, with spacings between them, of 10 ms, 5 filters per octave, resulting in 16 coefficients per window.
Methods of Comparison:
The coefficients of the sample tr1 has been used for experimenting an automatic recognizing system of the speaker, independent of the text, based in Gaussian mixtures (GMM- Gaussian Mixture Models), using 16 mixtures to represent the speaker.
As an algorithmic of comparison it has been used the logarithm of the verisimilitude (loglikelihood).
This method has been chosen because of its strength, but it is not the only one that can be used.
RESULTS
The attained results are listed in the table below:

The number of vectors indicate the number of windows resulting from the pre-processing, the output value is the sum of the probability logarithm of the vector to belong to the concerned speaker, and the standardization is done by the division of the output value by the number of vectors.
Conclusion
By means of the obtained results one concludes that there is no evidence that prooves that Speakers A and B (tr1 and tst1) are not the same.
As one may observe, tr1 and tst1 are certainly different from tst2 and tst3 due to the big difference in the coefficients of standardized output values, as expected.
Conclusion:
Through the results obtained,it is concluded that there is no evidence to prove that speakers tr1 and tst1 are different, given the proximity of the coefficients encountered. As can be observed in the table above, tr1 and tst1 are certainly different from tst2 and tst3, given the great difference in the standardized output coefficients, as was expected.
This case is of great importance since for the first time in the history of ICT, it has been proven mathematically that a voice obtained in a transcontact corresponds to that of a known live person. In an attempt to exhaust all the possibilities toexplain the case, Zilda herself, on 10/12/99, contacted BCP (her cellular provider) at (SP) 5509-6955, requesting an investigation of her calls on September 10, 1999. She was informed by Eunice, the supervisor, that this would require a judicial order, given only in the case of a police investigation. However, she was also informed that if the telephone had been on, the calls would not have been recorded, and if it had not been on (which was the case) any attempt to listen to the message would erase it.
No matter. The fact is that we have been and will continue to be in search of the truth.
