BRIEF HISTORY OF ITC
BRIEF HISTORY OF ITC
This text was part of the conference/workshop presented by Sonia Rinaldi in the Psychotronics Congress, in Ohio, USA. The event was organized by the
United States Psychotronics Association, from 16 to 20 July.

To talk about a brief history of the Electronic Voice Phenomenum, we must remember that a period of transition occurred between Mediumistic Communication and Communication via devices as we know them nowadays.

FIRST PHASE

In 1855 – it was built the first device with the purpose of getting paranormal voices, by a farmer in Ohio-USA, named Jonathan Koons. It is said that he received instructions from intellingent communicators on how to build - what was called - an "Electromagnetic Battery". (1)

In 1909 - In Brazil, Augusto Cambraia registered a device at the Patent Office in Rio de Janeiro, of what he called a "Vocative Telegraph" – though there is no information to prove it ever was built. (1)

By 1910 - The Brazilian priest, Roberto Landell de Moura was observed using a small box with which he spoke into, and from which voices were heard.

As he was a priest, he never gave details about this device, as the Church would not have approved.

The information was however registered by his Altar boy, who observed Father Landell using the box on many occasions, over the later years.

Dr. Landell was the real inventor of the "radio", pattented as the Wave-Transmiter, in 1904, by The Patent Office at Washington. (2)

In 1911 - In Holland, two physicists record details of an electrical device in a book entitled "Mystery of Death"; they called such device as "Dynamistograph". (1)

In 1920 - The most important inventor of all times, Thomas Edison, in an interview to the American magazine "Scientific American" said (3):

-"If our personality survives, then it is strictly logical or scientific to assume that it retains memory, intellect, other faculties, and knowledge that we acquire on this Earth.

Therefore, if personality exists after what we call death, it is reasonable to conclude that those who leave the Earth would like to communicate with those they have left here.

I am inclined to believe that our personality hereafter will be able to affect matter.

If this reasoning be correct, then, if we can evolve an instrument so delicate as to be affected by our personality as it survives in the next life, such an instrument, when made available, ought to record something".

By 1925 - The first contacts via telephone in the world were described in detail in a book entitled "Voices from Beyond by Telephone" - written by the Brazilian, Oscar D'argonell.

In this initial era of electronic contacts work, these communications may have been the most impressive of the time.

The whole book gives details on the long conversations between D'Argonnel and his communicators, always via telephone.

It includes descriptions on how the communicators produced the phenomenon, and curious methods used to verify the authenticity of the contacts. (4)

By 1933 - Brazilian Próspero Lapagesse and Cornelio Pires (1945), also publish their theories and intent to build a device for obtaining contacts. (5)

In 1952 - in Italy, Father Gemelli, while trying to record gregorian chant, was having problems with the wire of the magnetophone.

Exasperated he mentally requested the help of his deceased father, and at that point, a voice recorded: "Of course I shall help you, I am always with you". (3)

In 1956 - In USA, the californian Attila von Szalay, conceived of the possibility of registering the voices occurring in mediumistic sessions. He connected a microphone to a steel wire Recorder, and got some registrations. The results were published in the American Society for Psychical Research Bulletin. (1)

SECOND PHASE - The TAPE RECORDER PERIOD

In 1959 - The Swedish Friedrich Jurgenson casually got the first registrations of electronic voices. The difference between his occurrences and the previous ones, was that the registrations begun to be made on tape-recorders.

How Jurgenson got the first recordings:

He loved to record the singing of birds, and once when as he saw a ceftain bird in a tree singing, he put his tape-recorder on the window to register it.

This occurred on his farm, far from the town, with no other noises evident. When he listened to the tape, to his surprise, the singing of the bird was hardly audible, and instead a male voice spoke Norwegian.

Obviously, he initially suspected the voice had come from a radio station, but after making many new recording attempts, he discovered that the voices were indeed speaking to him – ruling out the possibility of them originating from radio stations. (1)

In 1965 - The Latvian Konstantin Raudive, impressed with Jurgenson's voices, decided perform his own experiments.

The results of his exhaustive work were carefully recorded in his book "Breakthrough: An Amazing Experiment in Electronic Communication with the Dead", where he noted down about 72.000 paranormal contacts.

In this beginning of the "Second Phase" of EVP, specific characteristics were used by the communicators to identify themselves - such as the "polyglot sentences - that is, many sentences were recorded, being composed of words of different languages.

Example:

-"Tack, Raudive. Gratulation tev Konci! Pekainis. Tev nav ko eilt, Konsta". This was a mix of Swedish/English/Latvian and German.

It means: -"Thanks Raudive. Congratulations to you Konst. You don't have to hurry up". (1)

To have an idea of these first record, we will listen to some samples of Dr. Raudive's voices:

AUDIO:

1. GERMAN: (...) Ich bin

translation: -"Imagine! I am!"

2. Raudive's wife name: -"Zenta"

3. SPANISH: -"Resuelta muchas questiones"

translation: -"You will solve many questions

4. Raudive's friend's name: -"Frei"

1970 - The American George Meek, born in Springfield, Ohio, imagined that the traditional devices used so far, were not really suitable. He believed that if higher frequencies were used as a bridge from our space to other spaces, higher spirit communicators would be able to contact us.

He invested in a series of prototypes called Mark I, Mark II... until Mark X. The prototype Mark I became ready in 1973.

The only ones to function were Mark III and IV, when for the first time in history, a full dialog with another Dimension was achieved.

Though, as Sarah Estep has suggested, apparently these devices required some special human energy to function, since she was invited by G. Meek to test it, and the results she got were not similar to those obtained by William O'Neil, the partner of Meek, and an excellent sensitive.

In spite of Meek's effort, the contacts ceased in the Fourth prototype. (3)

For you to have an idea of how these contacts sounded, we will listen to a dialog between William O'Neil and his deceased partner Doctor Müller:

(AUDIO)

Doc Muller: -"Turn that camera off"

Bil: -"Turn the camera off? Well sir.. I'd like to record this, so that, if you should tell me something, sir, and I forget, and I am trying to remember, I can always play this back!"

Doc Müller: -"I said turn that damned camera off!"

Bill: "Well, Doc Müller..."

Doc Müller: -"Turn that camera off or our conversation is at the end. Do you understand me William?"

Bill: -"All right sir!".

THE PIONEERS - by the 70's in Italy, appeared Marcelo Bacci, who is still working to this day;

in France appeared Monique Simonet, also presently working...

and in USA, our very dear Sarah Estep, with us today, very active in her experiments and who is the founder and coordinator of the American Association Electronic Voice Phenomena, based in Annapolis.

These colleagues have books published, and demonstration tapes.

Now lets listen to some samples gotten by Sarah Estep:

AUDIO: 1. Sarah: -"You're able to be at our conference..."

(voice) One will stay close

2. (voice) Let's talk

3. Sarah: " I will try to return tomorrow morning and I hope that I will have many friends with me at that time who will be able to speak in good loud clear voices. Until then, thank you again for being here this morning and speaking to me. So long for now.

(voice) -"Don't forget to speak"

4. Sarah: -"The significant message: death no more a casket"

(M) Death no more a casket

By 1985 - The German Klaus Schreiber creates a process to receive the first visual images from Beyond. (1)

In the beginning of the 90's, appear new and large Associations in many countries, such as Brazil, France, Portugal, Mexico, etc... which takes ITC-research to many new countries such as Spain, Australia, Japan, Argentina, etc.

FINAL COMMENTS:

We consider that all efforts done up to this day have not been enough to convince Scientists that we are dealing with one of the most important issues affecting Humanity - since civilisation began.

In the same way as 15th century Europeans discovered the "Americas", thereby enlarging their known universe, and taking them out of the isolation they were in - we could say that to discover that we may enter into contact with unseen Intelligences, is to take our Earth out of its solitary standpoint, as far as intelligent life is concerned.

So large investments have been made, mainly in USA, in the search for contacts with Extraterrestrial or other forms of intteligencies, while we have them at any time, during the day or night.

Electronic Contacts is something which is not of interest to Religions, but to Science.

Strong efforts are been made now, uniting many Countries in an international association called GAIT - Global Association Instrumental Transcommunication, coordinated by the American, Mr. Dale Palmer, from Indiana, with us today.

Intense efforts are being conducted mainly by USA and Brazil - to prove the reality of this phenomenum.

If this happens, indeed a new phase will start, not only for the history of ITC, but for the History of the Humanity.
